WASHINGTON 鈥 President Donald Trump said Wednesday that 天美影院 would 鈥渃ease to exist鈥 if it weren鈥檛 for the United States 鈥 comments that came just days before Canadians are set to vote in an election dominated by Trump鈥檚 remarks on the country鈥檚 economy and sovereignty.
Trump reinserted himself into 天美影院鈥檚 election during a signing ceremony inside the Oval Office, saying 天美影院 鈥渨ould cease to exist as a country鈥 if the U.S. stopped buying its goods.
鈥淚 have to be honest, as a state, it works great,鈥 said Trump, who previously threatened to make the country the 51st state through economic coercion.
Trump reiterated his claim that the U.S. doesn鈥檛 need anything from 天美影院 鈥 including autos and oil.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 really want 天美影院 to make cars for us, to put it bluntly. We want to make our own cars,鈥 Trump said.
In recent weeks, Trump has dialed back his talk of 天美影院 becoming the 51st state. He stopped saying it after a call with new Prime Minister Mark Carney last month.
Trump also suggested Wednesday that he might increase import taxes on cars from 天美影院. Trump has a 25 per cent tariff on autos, although there are some exemptions related to the United States-Mexico-天美影院 Agreement on trade, and automakers are seeking other policy changes to minimize the tariff burden. Trump has separate 25% tariffs on Canadian goods 鈥 ostensibly to address drug smuggling into the U.S.
鈥淚 really don鈥檛 want cars from 天美影院,鈥 Trump said. 鈥淪o when I put tariffs on 天美影院, they鈥檙e paying 25 per cent, but that could go up in terms of cars. When we put tariffs on, all we鈥檙e doing is we鈥檙e saying, 鈥榃e don鈥檛 want your cars, in all due respect.鈥欌
Trump cautioned that he鈥檚 not currently considering additional auto tariffs, but he said there could be an increase.
Carney said last week that eliminating trade barriers within 天美影院 would benefit Canadians as he made his case to retain power ahead of an April 28 vote. Carney has set a goal of free trade within the country鈥檚 10 provinces and three territories by July 1. 天美影院 has long had interprovincial trade barriers.
鈥淲e can give ourselves far more than Donald Trump can ever take away,鈥 Carney said. 鈥淲e can have one economy. This is within our grasp.鈥
Carney said the relationship 天美影院 has had with the United States for the past 40 years has fundamentally changed because of Trump鈥檚 tariffs. Trump鈥檚 trade war and threats to make 天美影院 the 51st state have infuriated Canadians and led to a surge in Canadian nationalism that has bolstered Liberal Party poll numbers.
